DTC were pleased to participate in the first two of this year’s Artwalk around the city.
We were delighted to be hosted at both events by Theatre Royal Wakefield Cafe on Westgate.
In January, DTC showcased Edith Grace Mackie and were joined by staff and students of Mackie Hill School who read some of their poems in response to “What Mackie Means to Me”.
We exhibited Edith’s life through photographs, paintings, letters. We also exhibited Jessica Rowbottom’s collection of photographs from now derelict Clayton Hospital, where the team visited in honour of Edith, who’s adult life was spent at the children’s ward, visiting and caring, both emotionally and financially and whom the wing was named after.
In March, we showcased just some of the women that DTC has secured Blue Plaque funding for and had a creative blue plaque and card making workshop.
DTC were honoured to host stitcheduptheatre@gmail.com from Brighton during their visit to Wakefield this Spring.
They are basing a whole creative project around a Forgotten Woman of Wakefield~
Mary Francis Heaton.
The future holds an Opera written by the creative team, and hopefully more expressive embroidery workshops to highlight the life of a women imprisoned at Wakefield’s Women’s Asylum her whole adult life for pursuing monies owed to her by a vicar for his daughter’s piano tuition.

DTC worked closely with Mackie Hill School in Crigglestone to look at Edith Mackie, now Blue Plaqued!
Year six students were creative, talented and are now well aware of the role that the Mackie Family has had on their school and community to this day.
Mackie Hill during this time has been fighting against plans to become part of an academies trust.
Dream Time Creative and our Forgotten Women of Wakefield project enjoyed the whole weekend celebrating International Women’s Day at the Mechanic’s Theatre.
The play, Difficult Women written by Steve Williams was sold out!
Wakefield’s Mayor, Stuart Heptinstall and MP Mary Creagh unveilled two more of our Blue Plaques after the performance, Florence Beaumont and Gertrude McCroben.
It was officially announce that Wakefield will be the first city in the UK to achieve Blue Plaque Parity for women.
The Forgotten Women of Wakefield Team set out in the crowds gathering for Wakefield’s Rhubarb Festival this year to promote #blueplaqueparity and our amazing historical women for our city!
